The President’s Awards
Gaisce, the President’s Award, plays a big part in our school. It is very popular with 5th year, Transition Year and Leaving Certificate Applied students, with almost all the girls participating in the Bronze Medal Award. In recent years a growing number are participating in the Silver Medal Awards. The Activities undertaken are many and varied.
In the Community Section, they include work in nursing homes, the Ozanam centre, Cope Foundation, the school library, child care centres, Partners In Learning and much more.
In the Personal Skills Section, their talents range from Music, Choir, Art, Computers, Dance, Public Speaking and again much more.
In the P.E. Section, their skills range from basketball, football, camogie, athletics, badminton, the gym and Martial Arts.
For their Venture Project, they undertake a challenging (but rewarding) walk and hostel stay in the Burren, Co. Clare, where they cook and cater for themselves. This trip is seen as a good bonding exercise where friendships are strengthened.
We, in the school, see Gaisce as a way of allowing our students develop their extra curricular and social skills in a non-competitive way. It is an enjoyable and satisfying part of the school year, where commitment, perseverance and talent are recognised and rewarded.
